You will need:

A cup, jar, or small glass Garlic cloves (unpeeled) Clean water

✅ Method 1: Whole garlic head in a cup

Fastest and easiest.

Steps:

Take one whole garlic bulb (don’t separate the cloves). Put it root side down on the rim of a small cup or shot glass so the bottom just touches the water. Add water until it barely touches the bottom of the garlic — do NOT submerge it. Place by a bright window. Change the water every 2–3 days to avoid mold.

What happens:

In 3–5 days → roots grow In 5–10 days → green shoots appear Greens can grow to 6–10 inches

Harvest:

Cut greens with scissors. They may regrow once.

✅ Method 2: Individual cloves in water

Good if you only want a few plants.

Steps:

Separate cloves but do not peel. Put cloves into a shallow dish or cup, pointy side up. Add water so only the bottom 1–2 mm touches water. Place in bright light. Change water every 2–3 days.

💡 Tips to keep them healthy

Don’t submerge the entire clove → causes rot. If mold appears, rinse the garlic and clean the cup. Greens taste milder than garlic cloves — great for soup, noodle dishes, eggs. Water-grown garlic will not form bulbs; it’s only for greens.

Grow in pots

A) Grow garlic greens (fast & easy, indoor)

🌱 How to Grow Garlic in Water (Hydro Method)

This is like growing green onions.

How:

Fill a small pot with potting mix. Push cloves into soil pointy side up, about 1–2 inches deep. Water lightly. Put near a sunny window.

Harvest:

Cut the greens when they grow to 6–10 inches. They regrow once or twice.

⚡ Fast — ready in 10–14 days.

B) Grow garlic bulbs (outdoor or big pot)

Garlic grows best in cool weather.

Best planting time:

Fall (Sep–Nov) in most US areas If planting now (winter), still works but bulbs will be smaller

How:

Use a deep pot or garden soil. Plant cloves 2–3 inches deep, pointy side up. Space cloves 4–6 inches apart. Water after planting, then keep soil slightly moist—not wet. Mulch with leaves or straw if planting outside.

Growth time:

6–8 months to form full bulbs.

You’ll see:

Winter: small sprouts Spring: fast growth Early summer: leaves turn yellow → time to harvest

3. Watering

Garlic hates soggy soil.

Water once a week or when top soil is dry.

4. Harvest

For greens:

Cut and use anytime.

For bulbs:

When half the leaves turn yellow, pull up the whole plant and cure (dry) 1–2 weeks.

Grow in ground:

1: Prepare the ground

Garlic grows best in:

Loose, fluffy soil Good drainage Sunny location (6+ hours)

Prepare the bed:

Loosen soil 6–8 inches deep Mix in compost (garlic loves organic matter) Make sure soil doesn’t stay soggy

2: Planting the garlic

Orientation: Pointy side UP, flat root side DOWN

Depth: 2–3 inches deep (about your thumb length)

Spacing: 4–6 inches apart in rows

Row spacing: 8–12 inches

Cover with soil and gently firm it down.

3:Mulch

This step is important.

Add:

Straw Pine needles Leaves Shredded mulch

Purpose:

Protects from cold Keeps moisture Reduces weeds

Spread 2–4 inches thick.

4:Watering

After planting → water once.

Then:

Keep soil slightly moist Do NOT overwater (garlic hates soggy soil)

In winter, you rarely need to water unless very dry.

5: What to expect

Winter:

Sprouts may show or stay underground — both normal.

Spring:

Fast green growth.

Early Summer (June–July):

Leaves turn yellow from the bottom → garlic bulbs ready.

6. Harvesting

Harvest when:

Bottom 3–4 leaves are yellow Top leaves still green

Use a garden fork to lift (do not pull by the stem).

7: Cure your garlic

Dry in a warm, airy place 1–2 weeks.

This makes garlic store longer.

👍 Extra Tips

Bigger cloves always give bigger bulbs — pick the biggest for planting. Softneck garlic (most grocery garlic) grows very well in NC. Plant more cloves than you need — some may be small.
